Parade and Fireworks Specific Details

Cape Story’s 51st Annual 4th of July Parade/Brunch & Fireworks!!!

Saturday July 5th

Parade 10am – Noon @ Cape Story Neighborhood & Park  – PARADE THEME – “Under the Sea”

Fireworks – 9:20pm @ Cape Story Beach

Parade

This year’s parade and brunch will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) on Saturday July 5th.  The parade route will start on Beech at the bike path, proceed down Beech to Poinciana, follow Poinciana to Bayberry, turn left on Bayberry and end in the neighborhood park. All bike riders, floats and marchers need to line up for the parade between 9:30am – 9:45am.  Please be careful spilling out onto Shore Drive.  If you have to, line your float up in Food Lion’s parking lot and we will work you into the parade as it starts moving.

As in past years, trophies will be given for Most Original, Most Patriotic and Best Theme.  The parade will be followed by a brunch in the park. There will also be biscuits, doughnuts, fruit and patriotic tunes.

As she has done in years past, an ice cream truck will also be provided courtesy of LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.

Volunteers are needed for the 4th of July brunch

  • Brunch set-up, Brunch Clean-up, Brunch servers – Please Arrive at the park at 9:30am to help.

Fireworks on the Bay

Similar to last year, the fireworks show will be presented by the local Virginia Beach company, VA Pyro.  The display will consist of 625 shells and will be launched around 9:20 pm on Saturday July 5th from the beach at First Landing State park.

Please remember – Storage, handling and use of fireworks without a permit from the Fire Marshal’s Office is a violation of City ordinance 12-43.2 and is a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Class 1 Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a $2500 fine and/or 12 months in jail.

Cape Story Parade and Fireworks Moved to Saturday July 5th Due to Impending Weather Conditions

Cape Story Parade and Fireworks have be moved to Saturday July 5th

Parade – Sat. July 5th from 10:00am to Noon.  Line up starts at 9:45am at Beech and Bike Path.

Fireworks – Sat. July 5th at 9:15pm.

We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause, but we know you will understand.  Based on the weather forecast for Friday, the Cape Story Event Coordinators have determined to move the 4th of July Parade and Fireworks to Saturday July 5th.  The current predictions show tropical storm/hurricane Arthur impacting our area from Friday morning through Friday evening.  Even if the rains are intermittent, it will make for a miserable parade and delay the fireworks set up.  Friday evening’s wind conditions are also predicted to be from the North which would result in fireworks being blown back toward spectators and campgrounds.   Saturday’s weather looks terrific, so the decision to reschedule was made.

Arthur Track 5pm Wed

So stay safe and enjoy your Friday.  Here are a couple of suggestion how to spend your Friday:

  • Have a traditional Shore Drive Hurricane party (if you do, please invite me).

  • Use the extra day to put the winning touches on your parade floats.

  • Spend time sand bagging your low lying homes from the tide surges (seriously, it looks like tides + surge will be less than 3 feet and rain less than 1.5 inches, minimal impact our area).

If you have any questions, please send me an email at todd@sdcc.info

Swimming Advisory Issued for Beaches Along Cape Story and First Landing State Park

The city’s health department has issued a swimming and wading advisory for the Chesapeake Bay between Wake Forest and Kendall streets because of bacteria levels in the water.

The advisory includes the First Landing State Park coastline along the bay. It does not affect the Oceanfront.

Recent tests by the health department found bacteria levels exceeded State Water Quality Standards, according to a news release.

Signs will be posted on the beach.
