national night out in virginia beach

On Tuesday, August 3, 2010, communities nationwide will be celebrating the “27th Annual National Night Out.”  The goal is to (1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, (2) generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, (3) strengthen neighborhood and police community partnerships, and (4) send a message to the criminals that neighborhoods and the police are united in fighting crime.

Some of the neighborhoods participating in Virginia Beach are:

1st Precinct – Lotus Creek, Ocean Lakes, Red Mill Farm, Shire Village (Buckner Farm), South Shore Estates, Southgate, and Villages at West Neck.

2nd Precinct – Atlantis Apartments, Baycliff, Croatan, Rudee Heights, Seabridge Square, Southall Quarter, Waldon by the Chesapeake, and Wolfsnare Plantation.

3rd Precinct – Bishops Gate, Chesapeake Beach, Cypress Point, Diamond Springs/Gardenwood Park, L&J Gardens, Lake Shores, Little Creek, Summerset Lake Condos, and Thoroughgood Colony.

4th Precinct – Bellamy Plantation, Commons at Princess Anne, Driftide Condos, Fairfield Forest, Framingham Village (College Park), Green Run, Kempsville Lake, Liberty Ridge Townhomes, Salem Woods, and Tivoli Apartments.

Most events begin around 6:30 p.m.

Even if your neighborhood is not having a planned event, we encourage all of the citizens of Virginia Beach to get out and send the message that we are fighting back against crime and drugs.  Leave your porch lights on all night to show your support!

2nd Annual Independence Day Paddle Board Thank You and Pictures

Big ginormous Mahalo to all who competed in the event. Everyone paddled hard, exhibited great sportsmanship and filled the beach with Aloha. Thank you so much for making my fledgling event a success for the 2nd year.

If anyone is interested in their paddle time, just send me an email.  Special thanks to all the volunteers and to Freedom surf shop, Tula Adventure Sports and to Mule Transport Systems. The free swag was much fun to pass out. Thanks again everyone. I look forward to next years event!

Shoulder paving to begin from Beech to Kendall on south side of Shore Drive – Monday July 19th

According to City Traffic Engineer, Mike Shahsiah, the shoulder paving project commencing today, Monday July 19th, should take 1 to 2 weeks to complete (Closer to 1 week without weather delays).

The project will add a 5-6 foot section of shoulder paving along the south side of Shore Drive from the sidewalk at Bloom & Beech St. to Kendall St.  The existing pavement from Beech to Wake Forest (and a few other small sections) will be milled and paved.  Areas without existing paving will have new pavement added.  These areas are mostly between Wake Forest and Kendall.  After paving is complete, both shoulders (north and south) along Shore Drive will be striped to show a 3-4 foot bike area.

Cape Story’s 47th Annual 4th of July Parade/Brunch & Fireworks!!!

Cape Story’s 47th Annual 4th of July Parade/Brunch & Fireworks!!!

Sunday July 4th

Parade 10am – Noon @ Cape Story Neighborhood & Park

Fireworks – 9:20pm @ Cape Story Beach

(Rain Date for Fireworks is Monday July 5th)

This year’s parade and brunch will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) on Sunday July 4th.  The parade route will start on Beech at the bike path, proceed down Beech to Poinciana, follow Poinciana to Bayberry, turn left on Bayberry and end in the neighborhood park. All bike riders, floats and marchers need to line up for the parade between 9:30am – 9:45am.  Please be careful spilling out onto Shore Drive.  If you have to, line your float up in Bloom’s parking lot and we will work you into the parade as it starts moving.

This year’s parade theme will be Patriotic Pets and People.  Awards will be given for Most Original, Most Patriotic and Best Theme.  Bribing the judges has been discontinued at the suggestion of our lawyers (we really don’t have any lawyers, but if we did I’m sure they’d say this).  The parade will be followed by a brunch in the park. There will also be biscuits, doughnuts, fruit and patriotic tunes.

As she has done in years past, an ice cream truck will also be provided courtesy of LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.

The annual fireworks show will once again be presented by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale. The display will consist of 700 shells and will be launched around 9:20 pm on Sunday July 4th from the beach at First Landing State park. The rain date will be Monday July 5th at the same time.  Please remember – Storage, handling and use of fireworks without a permit from the Fire Marshal’s Office is a violation of City ordinance 12-43.2 and is a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Class 1 Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a $2500 fine and/or 12 months in jail.

Volunteers are still needed for all of the 4th of July events.

  • Brunch set-up, Brunch Clean-up, Brunch servers – Please Arrive at the park at 9:30am to help.
  • Fireworks set-up and clean-up – Trucks and movers are asked to arrive at First Landing at 1:00pm.
  • Trucks and movers are desperately needed for the fireworks.  Last year we had a great group of people to support this event and it ran very smoothly.  Let’s do it again this year.  It is only about an hour worth of time, so please help.  Please contact Todd Solomon at 667-8533 or todd@sdcc.info

City Working to Clean-up Appearance of Cape Story Beach

The following exceprt was taken from an email sent by Phill Roehrs, City Engineer, in response to a resident’s question on what could be done to improve the appearance of the beach and remove the dirt, debris and plants that were deposited from the sand replenishment project.  The main focus of the clean-up will be the areas between Oak and Kendall.

Given the relatively poor appearance of the beach, and our commitment to the community to patrol and police the area until the condition is satisfactory, I am happy to report that PW/Beach Operations will be visiting the area, perhaps as early as today, to prepare the area for further grooming.  A tractor will first visit the area to scarify the beach, and will be followed within a few days by a beach groomer to sift the top layer to remove as much deleterious material as possible.  I sincerely hope this will help to improve the appearance of the beach, but we stand ready to revisit the site again if this latest attempt does not yield satisfactory results.

For those of you that don’t know what a beach groomer is or how it operates, here is a picture and a link.  As of 6/16/10, the beach was scarified and is waiting to be groomed.

Cape Story’s 12th Annual Spring Fling

Similar to last year, we had to postpone the event one week due to weather.  But we had sunny skies on a Memorial Day weekend and a wonderful event that drew about 80 children and parents for the festivities.  Jared from Astro DJs kept the party shaking with cool tunes and special events.  DeeDee from Bobby the Clown Agency made great balloon animals and painted unique designs on many smiling faces.  All enjoyed hamburgers, hotdogs, and chips courtesy of the Civic Association.  Snow cones and popcorn where graciously provided by LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.  Yummy desserts were also brought and shared by neighbors.    Kids of all ages had an out of this world time on the moonwalk, while others competed in various games to try to win gift certificates to AMC theatres.  The kids even managed to beat the adults in a tug-o-war match.

Event winners were:

  • Hula Hoops – Mia Wallace
  • Belly Ball – Jenifer and Todd Solomon
  • Water Balloon Toss #1 – Rachel Reiss & Haley Reiss
  • Water Balloon Toss #2 – Chris Buca & Alley Wood
  • Sack Race #1 – Elizabeth & Emma Jennings
  • Sack Race #2 – Julian Molldow
  • Sack Race #3 – Brett Pendergast
  • Basket Ball Free Throw (7yr & under) – Mason Solomon
  • Basket Ball Free Throw (8yr & up) – Mack Barnes

 Additional Spring Fling Thank You!!!

Thanks to Patrick Slyer and Andy Baan for cooking up the burgers and dogs.  A special thanks goes to the few that support the many, Shirley Drye, Empsy Munden, Don Lawson, Brian Harrell, Gary Forrest and Jenifer Solomon for set-up, serving and clean-up.  And another big thank you to this year’s coordinator, Todd Solomon, for putting together a terrific event.
