All bike riders, floats and marchers need to line up for the parade between 9:30am – 9:45am.  Please be careful spilling out onto Shore Drive.  If you have to, line your float up in Food Lion’s parking lot and we will work you into the parade as it starts moving.

As in past years, trophies will be given for Most Original, Most Patriotic and Best Theme.  The parade will be followed by a brunch in the park. There will also be biscuits, doughnuts, fruit and patriotic tunes.

As she has done in years past, an ice cream truck will also be provided courtesy of LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.

Volunteers are needed for the 4th of July brunch

  • Brunch set-up, Brunch Clean-up, Brunch servers – Please Arrive at the park at 9:30am to help.

Fireworks on the Bay

Similar to last year, the fireworks show will be presented by the local Virginia Beach company, VA Pyro.  The display will consist of 625 shells and will be launched around 9:20 pm on Saturday July 5th from the beach at First Landing State park.

Please remember – Storage, handling and use of fireworks without a permit from the Fire Marshal’s Office is a violation of City ordinance 12-43.2 and is a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Class 1 Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a $2500 fine and/or 12 months in jail.

Cape Story Parade and Fireworks Moved to Saturday July 5th Due to Impending Weather Conditions

Cape Story Parade and Fireworks have be moved to Saturday July 5th

Parade – Sat. July 5th from 10:00am to Noon.  Line up starts at 9:45am at Beech and Bike Path.

Fireworks – Sat. July 5th at 9:15pm.

We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause, but we know you will understand.  Based on the weather forecast for Friday, the Cape Story Event Coordinators have determined to move the 4th of July Parade and Fireworks to Saturday July 5th.  The current predictions show tropical storm/hurricane Arthur impacting our area from Friday morning through Friday evening.  Even if the rains are intermittent, it will make for a miserable parade and delay the fireworks set up.  Friday evening’s wind conditions are also predicted to be from the North which would result in fireworks being blown back toward spectators and campgrounds.   Saturday’s weather looks terrific, so the decision to reschedule was made.

Arthur Track 5pm Wed

So stay safe and enjoy your Friday.  Here are a couple of suggestion how to spend your Friday:

  • Have a traditional Shore Drive Hurricane party (if you do, please invite me).

  • Use the extra day to put the winning touches on your parade floats.

  • Spend time sand bagging your low lying homes from the tide surges (seriously, it looks like tides + surge will be less than 3 feet and rain less than 1.5 inches, minimal impact our area).

Swimming Advisory Issued for Beaches Along Cape Story and First Landing State Park

The city’s health department has issued a swimming and wading advisory for the Chesapeake Bay between Wake Forest and Kendall streets because of bacteria levels in the water.

The advisory includes the First Landing State Park coastline along the bay. It does not affect the Oceanfront.

Recent tests by the health department found bacteria levels exceeded State Water Quality Standards, according to a news release.

Signs will be posted on the beach.

CSBTS Civic Association Meeting – Monday May 12th – City Parking Study Presentation

CSBTS Civic Association General Meeting

Monday May 12th at 7:30pm in the Virginia Beach Resort Conference Hotel

Special guest speaker – Mr. Mike Shahsiah, Senior Traffic Engineer for City of VB.

  • Not enough parking available for company?

  • Too many beach tourists parking on  your front lawn?

  • Cars parked on Shore Drive make it hard to see when you pull out from your street?

  • Illegal “No Parking” signs placed on your street?

Come out and hear what the City has been studying regarding these questions and more for our neighborhood.  Below is the basic study premise and the interim study details can be viewed by clicking this link – Bayfront TRAFFIC STUDY REPORT

At the request of Bayfront Advisory Committee, Traffic Engineering staff has surveyed the Bayfront Communities north of Shore Drive between the Lesner Bridge and State Park, including Cape Story by the Sea community. The purpose of this parking survey was to locate the illegal no parking signs, misplaced signs, illegal encroachments, and those legal no parking signs that are no longer needed due to changes over the years in this area.

Beach Sand Replishment Project

The City has begun removing sand from the Lesner Bridge Spoils site in order to create a laydown site that will support the bridge replacement project.  The sand from this spoils site is being hauled by dump truck to the Cape Henry beach via the Oak Street access.  The sand will be spread from the Lynnhaven fishing pier to First Landing State Park.

Below is an email from the City’s project coordinator, Phil Roehrs, to our civic association President, Empsy Munden.

Click here to see a map of the project – CAPE_HENRY_BEACH_PLACEMENT_SITE_2014-04-29_(2)

Empsy,

Regrettably, this needed truck haul came about too quickly to allow our normal process of community engagement. The total time period from the date we learned that the removal of sand from the stockpile was necessary to the date we were able to notify the public was less than three weeks.  Several tasks had to be performed before we knew for sure that the proposal to haul it to Cape Henry Beach was viable, and we notified the public as soon as we could.

The critical speed issues are two-fold: the need to get the stockpile site prepared in advance of the bridge replacement contractor’s mobilization in June; and, performing the truck haul as soon as we can to minimize the impact on the summer beach season.  The sand is a better quality than the previous Cape Henry truck haul – coming from the Lynnhaven Inlet sand stockpile versus the Maple Street site.
