Cape Story requests action from City to prevent flooding of short streets.

Dear Mr. Mundy,

Todd Solomon has sent you some photos of the high tide flooding that occurred Monday Oct. 29th around 10:30am high tide cycle for Long Creek.  The water level above the SW grate at the about 14 inches and Todd’s estimates for the height of the high tide for this event is 7.0 feet when compared to the 2009 Nor’Ida and Todd lives on First Landing.

At least 8 homes between Calvert and Wake Forest had water come into their homes.  The one at the end of First Landing Lane had at close to 18 inches and will need dry wall and insulation replaced.  All of the flooding for these homes was a direct result of the tidal surge coming backwards through the First Landing outfalls in the Cape Henry canal.

Based on Todd’s and neighbors observations during the storm, water from the Cape Henry canal never breeched the roadway crest at the intersection of Admiral and First Landing.  Water entered the ditch along the trail and filled the low lying areas and then flowed west toward Wake Forest.  The maps produced after the 2009 event were very close to what actually happened.

Based on the success of the backflow prevention device in Ocean Park, as President of Cape Story by the Sea, I formally request once again that some type of device is installed in the First Landing outfalls ASAP.  The flooding damage as a result of Sandy could have been prevented.  Based on past experience from 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012, a backflow device will function satisfactory for events that have a high tide less than 8.5 feet.  This should be acceptable for most events.  Of course, if a Cat 2 storm hits us directly, we’re all in trouble.  Nothing will save us and we know that.

Please let me know what the plans will be moving forward and when we can expect action on this request.  I know there is a larger plan for the entire Shore Drive area, but this solution should cost less than $100k and be installed before the next nor’easter.

I would also request and update on the work being done at the Poinciana Pump Station.

 Sincerely,

Empsy Munden, President Cape Story by the Sea

Emergency Notification System Test Scheduled for Thursday Oct. 11th at 6:00pm

Cape Story Residents have been asked to participate in the City’s testing of a new Emergency Notification System.  The system will call your home phone number with a “test message”.

The system will be used in emergency situations to notify citizens of important safety information.  It will be similar to the notification system used by the VB Schools.

Additional informaiton regarding the purpose for the test and system:

The purpose of the test is to target a specific area of the city at any given time. A hostage situation would be a perfect example where they would warn everyone to stay inside until advised otherwise. For this first test they have selected one residence that will not receive the message to simulate a hostage situation. That person is aware of the test and will report back to confirm that they did not receive the test message. They could also use it where a person known to “wander” is missing and believed to be in a general area. The last missing person here in CSBTS was a very expensive experience with a police helicopter in the air for almost two hours and numerous patrol cars. It might also be used if there is a bank robbery and the robber is on the loose.

4th of July Parade and Fireworks Notice

Cape Story’s 49th Annual 4th of July Parade/Brunch & Fireworks!!!

Wednesday July 4th

Parade 10am – Noon @ Cape Story Neighborhood & Park

Fireworks – 9:20pm @ Cape Story Beach

(Rain Date for Fireworks is Thursday July 5th)

PARADE THEME – Red, White and Scary

This year’s parade and brunch will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) on Wednesday July 4th.  The parade route will start on Beech at the bike path, proceed down Beech to Poinciana, follow Poinciana to Bayberry, turn left on Bayberry and end in the neighborhood park. All bike riders, floats and marchers need to line up for the parade between 9:30am – 9:45am.  Please be careful spilling out onto Shore Drive.  If you have to, line your float up in Food Lion’s parking lot and we will work you into the parade as it starts moving.

This year’s strange parade theme, “Red, White and Scary” received the most votes at the Spring Fling.  We know how much Cape Story loves Halloween, so this may be a summer tribute of some type.  Trophies will be given for Most Original, Most Patriotic and Best Theme.  The parade will be followed by a brunch in the park. There will also be biscuits, doughnuts, fruit and patriotic tunes.

As she has done in years past, an ice cream truck will also be provided courtesy of LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.

The annual fireworks show will once again be presented by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale. The display will consist of 700 shells and will be launched around 9:20 pm on Wednesday July 4th from the beach at First Landing State park. The rain date will be Thursday July 5th at the same time.  If it looks like rain, please check your emails and www.capestory.org for updates.  Please remember – Storage, handling and use of fireworks without a permit from the Fire Marshal’s Office is a violation of City ordinance 12-43.2 and is a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Class 1 Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a $2500 fine and/or 12 months in jail.

Volunteers are always needed for all of the 4th of July events.

  • Brunch set-up, Brunch Clean-up, Brunch servers – Please Arrive at the park at 9:30am to help.

  • Fireworks set-up and clean-up – Trucks and movers are asked to arrive at First Landing at 1:00pm.

***A special plea is being made for 4WD trucks and movers to help with the fireworks.  Last year we didn’t have enough and set up was very difficult.  It is only about an hour worth of time, so please help.  Please contact Todd Solomon at 667-8533 or todd@sdcc.info ***
