Cape Story’s 47th Annual 4th of July Parade/Brunch & Fireworks!!!

Sunday July 4th

Parade 10am – Noon @ Cape Story Neighborhood & Park

Fireworks – 9:20pm @ Cape Story Beach

(Rain Date for Fireworks is Monday July 5th)

This year’s parade and brunch will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) on Sunday July 4th. The parade route will start on Beech at the bike path, proceed down Beech to Poinciana, follow Poinciana to Bayberry, turn left on Bayberry and end in the neighborhood park. All bike riders, floats and marchers need to line up for the parade between 9:30am – 9:45am. Please be careful spilling out onto Shore Drive. If you have to, line your float up in Bloom’s parking lot and we will work you into the parade as it starts moving.

This year’s parade theme will be Patriotic Pets and People. Awards will be given for Most Original, Most Patriotic and Best Theme. Bribing the judges has been discontinued at the suggestion of our lawyers (we really don’t have any lawyers, but if we did I’m sure they’d say this). The parade will be followed by a brunch in the park. There will also be biscuits, doughnuts, fruit and patriotic tunes.

As she has done in years past, an ice cream truck will also be provided courtesy of LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.

The annual fireworks show will once again be presented by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale. The display will consist of 700 shells and will be launched around 9:20 pm on Sunday July 4th from the beach at First Landing State park. The rain date will be Monday July 5th at the same time. Please remember – Storage, handling and use of fireworks without a permit from the Fire Marshal’s Office is a violation of City ordinance 12-43.2 and is a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Class 1 Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a $2500 fine and/or 12 months in jail.

Volunteers are still needed for all of the 4th of July events.

Brunch set-up, Brunch Clean-up, Brunch servers – Please Arrive at the park at 9:30am to help.
Fireworks set-up and clean-up – Trucks and movers are asked to arrive at First Landing at 1:00pm.
Trucks and movers are desperately needed for the fireworks. Last year we had a great group of people to support this event and it ran very smoothly. Let’s do it again this year. It is only about an hour worth of time, so please help. Please contact Todd Solomon at 667-8533 or todd@sdcc.info

City Working to Clean-up Appearance of Cape Story Beach

The following exceprt was taken from an email sent by Phill Roehrs, City Engineer, in response to a resident’s question on what could be done to improve the appearance of the beach and remove the dirt, debris and plants that were deposited from the sand replenishment project. The main focus of the clean-up will be the areas between Oak and Kendall.

Given the relatively poor appearance of the beach, and our commitment to the community to patrol and police the area until the condition is satisfactory, I am happy to report that PW/Beach Operations will be visiting the area, perhaps as early as today, to prepare the area for further grooming. A tractor will first visit the area to scarify the beach, and will be followed within a few days by a beach groomer to sift the top layer to remove as much deleterious material as possible. I sincerely hope this will help to improve the appearance of the beach, but we stand ready to revisit the site again if this latest attempt does not yield satisfactory results.

For those of you that don’t know what a beach groomer is or how it operates, here is a picture and a link. As of 6/16/10, the beach was scarified and is waiting to be groomed.

City’s Draft Report for Storm Water Improvements in Cape Story

The City hired Parsons Brinckerhoff to perform a study of storm water improvements for Cape Story. The following link will take you to the DRAFT of this study.
