Storm Water and Flood Damage follow up –must report concerns and problems to Public Works 385-1470 Nor’easter– SDCC and civic associations are working with City Storm water engineer, Mike Mundy to gather data from the storm in order to identity areas for improvement (back flow of water through storm drains and flood on streets and park noted). Please contact Mike Mundy at MMundy@vbgov.com with Your stories and pictures.
Sand Replenishment on the Bay– Jim Wood, Phillip Roerhs and David Hansen have provided us with information noted. Current information indicates The remainder of the beach from East of the fishing pier to Kendall Street in Cape Story will be replenished using sand dredged from Long creek, dumped onto the spoils site at Marina Shores (end of Maple Street) dredging noted currently in progress, and sand will be trucked onto Cape Story by the Oak Street Access.

Cape Henry Beach Replenishment – Truck Haul To Begin Feb. 10th

Cape Henry Beach Replenishment – Truck Haul

The Lynnhaven Inlet dredge work and beach replenishment of Cape Henry Beach as performed by Cottrell Engineering Corporation under the contract with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers was completed from Lesner Bridge to just east of Ships Watch Court.

Public Works is expecting to continue beach replenishing on February 10, between areas from where the inlet dredge work was completed and First Landing State Park. As much as 50,000 cubic yards of beach sand materials is expected for truck haul from the Maple Street area. Launching of the truck haul project was a consequence of Virginia Marine Resources Commission’s approval of a permit modification to allow truck haul onto Cape Henry Beach at the City’s request. The truck haul project is anticipated to take place until the middle of March.

THE FOLLOWING SO-CALLED PAGE TWO ITEMS (PROJECTS OVER $50,000 WITH NO OBJECTIONS AND WITH STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR APPROVAL) WERE APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY, INCLUDING AGENDA ITEM 5 THAT WAS MOVED TO THIS SECTION OF THE AGENDA:

2K. U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS & CITY OF VIRGINIA BEACH, #09-0427, requests authorization to modify the existing Cape Henry Beach nourishment permit to allow the truck-hauling of beach quality sand from the City-owned Maple Street dredged material management area to the easternmost end of Cape Henry Beach. A maximum of 50,000 cubic yards of beach quality sand will be delivered and spread along the beach within the overall boundaries of the Lynnhaven Fishing Pier and First Landing State Park situated along the Chesapeake Bay.

Check out the information about an Elevation Certificate. City staff recommended getting one of these if you’d like to possibly reduce your flood insurance costs. You actual floor elevation is identified by this certificate and based on the height, you may qualify for a lower premium. Check with your insurance company before getting the certificate.

Wachovia Bank on Shore Drive is robbed; man sought

Police are looking for a man who robbed the Wachovia Bank at 2821 Shore Drive this morning.

The robbery occurred at 9:22 a.m. and the man ran away toward some nearby apartments afterward, said Virginia Beach Police Lt. Max Hayden.

The man is described as white, 20 to 30, and 5 feet 8 to 9 inches tall, Hayden said. He weighs 170 to 180 pounds and was wearing a gray shirt with long sleeves, khaki pants, a black ski mask and blue rubber gloves.

The man carried a black semi-automatic handgun, Hayden said.

Anyone with information was being asked to call Virginia Beach Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (562-5887).

Revised Dredging Schedule for Cape Henry Beach

The following notice was sent to us by City Staffer, Drew Lankford, (757) 385-8062, dlankfor@vbgov.com

Cottrell Contracting Corp. of Chesapeake has revised its schedule for the dredging project that is in progress at Cape Henry Beach. Because of rough seas the week of Dec. 7, the contractor shifted their work and is currently dredging Long Creek and Long Creek Canal. They are pumping this material into the Maple Street disposal area, which allows them to progress towards their scheduled completion date. This work is part of their contract with the Army Corps of Engineers and allows them to continue with scheduled work without losing days due to weather conditions.

The dredge work on Long Creek is expected to be completed by Dec. 24. The contractor plans to take a three-day holiday for the benefit of both their employees and residents. They will continue their work on sand replenishment on Sunday, Dec. 27 when they will resume dredging in the inlet with sand replacement at Cape Henry Beach.

There are approximately 13,000 cubic yards of material yet to be dredged in the inlet channel, which should be sufficient to complete the replenishment of the bulkheaded section of beach just west of the Seagate condominium.

The city is planning a truck haul to the east end of Cape Henry Beach when the inlet dredge work is completed. The city expects to receive Virginia Marine Resources Commission permission for that truck haul at the January meeting.
