Virginia Beach Transit Extension Study

Hampton Roads Transit, in partnership with the City of Virginia Beach, is in the early stages of conducting the Virginia Beach Transit Extension Study (VBTES), an evaluation of transit options for the community. The study will examine transit alternatives for a fixed guide way connection from the eastern end of The Tide [a.k.a. Light Rail] in Norfolk at Newtown Road to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront area along the Norfolk Southern Corporation’s inactive railroad right of way. The VBTES will be completed in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), as amended.

You are invited to attend one of the following public meetings that will introduce the study and provide opportunity to submit public comment:

September 9, 2009

Princess Anne High School

4400 Va. Beach Blvd.

Virginia Beach, VA 23462

6:00 – 8:00 PM

September 10, 2009

Va. Beach Convention Center

1000 19’h Street

Virginia Beach, VA 23451

6:00 – 8:00 PM

This will be the first of several public meetings held during the course of the study, which is expected to take between 12 – 18 months. These first meetings will serve as a kick-off to the public involvement program and will describe the overall study process, the study schedule, and the required technical analysis to be conducted. The Project Team will present attendees with information about the transit alternatives under consideration and the potential impacts of each alternative to be evaluated.

All information distributed at the public meetings will also be made available on the project web page, http://www.goHRT.com/vbtes. Shore Drive speed reduction survey. (Survey has been CLOSED)

Thank you to the 700 residents who took the time to answer the survey questions.  The results are being compiled and will be posted soon.

Your input is desperately needed.

The following survey is being sponsored by the Cape Story by the Sea Civic Association (CSBTS), Cape Henry Shores Civic Association (CHSCA)and Shore Drive Community Coalition (SDCC). The survey will be used to help determine the effectiveness of the temporary speed limit reduction from 45 mph to 35 mph along Shore Drive between Great Neck Road and First Landing State Park.

Local residents and civic leagues have repeatedly requested the City over the past 5 years to reduce the speed on this stretch of road. The reduced speed will help improve safety for the 800 residents of Cape Story by the Sea and Cape Henry Shores that cross Shore Drive on foot and by vehicle without the aid of signalized intersections or marked crosswalks. A reduced speed limit will also make the road safer for Type-A bicyclists that voted this roadway as their number one most traveled route in Virginia Beach (Virginia Beach Bikes and Trails Plan 2004) by a 2 to 1 margin over the second most popular route in the City.

Citizens Encouraged to turn in illegal fireworks

CITIZENS ENCOURAGED TO TURN IN ILLEGAL FIREWORKS ON JUNE 27th

Every year adults and children are seriously injured and fires ignited by people setting off fireworks across the city. In a joint effort to promote safety this Fourth of July holiday, the Virginia Beach Police Department and Virginia Beach Fire Marshal’s Office are encouraging citizens to voluntarily turn in illegal fireworks.

Citizens may dispose of unlawful fireworks without the worry of repercussion by turning fireworks over to Officers or Fire Marshal staff on Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Third Police Precinct, located at 926 Independence Boulevard (behind Bayside Library) and the Fourth Police Precinct at 840 Kempsville Road. Citizens will not be asked, or required, to provide their names or any personal information.

Virginia Beach Police officers will accept any type of fireworks that citizens want to dispose of in a safe manner.  It is in the best interest of public safety to ensure that such items are disposed of properly and do not end up in the hands of children who may be permanently injured by handling them.

Citizens unable to attend the event on June 27 are reminded that fireworks can be turned in for disposal at any of the four police precincts.  The precinct locations are as follows:

  •  First Precinct – 2509 Princess Anne Road – 385-4377
  • Second Precinct – 820 Virginia Beach Boulevard –  385-2700
  • Third Precinct –  926 Independence Boulevard – 385-2703
  • Fourth Precinct – 840 Kempsville Road – 385-2800

For further information regarding this public safety event, please contact Sgt. T. McLaughlin of the Virginia Beach Police Crime Prevention Unit at 385-1006, or Fire Marshal, Battalion Chief Richard C. Kephart, at 385-4228.

If interested in researching the city code:

Sec. 12-43.2.  Fireworks and pyrotechnic displays unlawful

Violation of any provision of this section shall constitute a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The city of Virginia Beach will host the annual Fourth of July Holiday Fireworks Display on July 4 at Mount Trashmore and at the oceanfront along the boardwalk. Logon to www.VBgov.com for more details.

Participate in VB Emergency Exercise

On Thursday, June 25th, the City of Virginia Beach , in conjunction with the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health, will be holding an exercise to test our capabilities to deliver medications and commodities to the public in the event of an emergency.

Public participation is very important to the success of this exercise, and if you have about 15 minutes to spare between 9:30am and 11:30am that day, we would appreciate if you would drive through our exercise to receive mock medication, (in the form of candy),  and water.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing you on June 25!
